Wikipedia – Cellulite is a topographic skin change that is claimed to occur in most postpubertal females. It presents as a modification of skin topography evident by skin dimpling and nodularity that occurs mainly in women on the pelvic region, lower limbs, and abdomen and is caused by the herniation of subcutaneous fat within fibrous connective tissue, leading to a padded or orange peel–like appearance. Cellulite is a description rather than a physical object. The term was first used in the 1920s and began appearing in English language publications in the late 1960s, the earliest reference in Vogue magazine, “Like a swift migrating fish the word cellulite has suddenly crossed the Atlantic.” Its existence as a real disorder has been questioned, and the prevailing medical opinion is that it is merely the “normal condition of many women and some men”. One cosmetic company has noted its historical place in industrialised societies as an “inappropriate term used by women to describe curves which they judge to be too plump and not very aesthetic”.
Medline Plus – Cellulite – Cellulite is fat that is deposited in pockets just below the surface of the skin. It occurs around the hips, thighs, and buttocks. Because it is very close to the surface of the skin, cellulite leads to a dimpled appearance.
New York Times Article on cellulite – CELLULITE — the dimpled, uneven skin that mars the backsides and thighs of women everywhere — is a scourge to bikini-wearers and a squelcher of lights-on romps in bed. No wonder the search for a solution has women shelling out millions.
List of Cellulite Doctors – Not all Mesotherapists and Cellulite Treatment Specialists are alike. Mesotherapy (cellulite treatment) should be performed by an MD or DO who has ACCME Approved Continuing Medical Education Credits (CME’s). A nurse or pysician’s assistant should not administer Mesotherapy without the MD or DO being present. Patients should seek a Mesotherapist trained by the Bissoon Institute of Mesotherapy.
Exercising to reduce cellulite – Websites and magazines are full of advertising for a variety of products, methods, or devices intended to miraculously melt cellulite.
This short article focuses on serious and effective treatment to date.
Cellulite Treatments – Cellulite is the medical term for what we commonly call “orange peel” or “cottage cheese” skin. Most adult women have at least one area of cellulite-affected skin on their body – usually around their thighs, hips, or buttocks. If you check those areas and notice a spot that looks and feels like there are a bunch of tiny bumps under the skin, you’ve found a patch of cellulite.
University of Maryland on Cellulite- Cellulite may be more visible than fat deeper in the body. Even thin people can have cellulite, because we all have layers of fat just below the surface of the skin. Collagen fibers that connect fat to the skin may stretch, break down, or pull tight, allowing the fat cells to bulge out. This creates the rippled look of cellulite.
Web MD – Can You Beat Cellulite?-”Caffeine creams work great to pull fluids out of the spaces between cells and induce lipolysis -fat burning in the layer just below the skin’s surface,” says Newburger.
Medicine Net – Is there anything a woman can do to get rid of her cellulite? – “It started out on my upper thighs … now it’s creeping down to my knees!” says Maria Johnston (not her real name), a spunky, athletic, 43-year-old from Miami, Fla. “How much lower is it going to go? To my ankles?
Cellulite: The Battle of the Bulge – Vanderbilt University – In society today it seems the goal of many Americans is to be thin. In their hope of achieving this so-called perfection, it means taking extreme measures to get there. A common complaint of most women in their quest for thinness is trying to combat cellulite, a word that makes them cringe. It seems to plague women (rarely ever effecting men) of all shapes and sizes and usually resides in the hips, thighs and buttocks regions, and sometimes even the triceps and lower abdomen areas. By common definition, “cellulite is lumpy unevenly distributed bulges of fatty tissue which often have a cottage cheese consistency. It is composed of gel-like lumps of water, fat and residues of toxic substances that should have been eliminated from the body.”
